The type of yarn you use to crochet your amigurumi can change the look and feel of your finished product. We all have our preferences when it comes to yarn, but after trying out quite a few different yarn brands, I wanted to share my thoughts on a few that are very popular in the amigurumi community. This is all my opinion and experience with each of these yarns. My goal is that this will help you narrow down your choices when selecting a yarn to crochet with. For the record, some of these yarns I love, and some I absolutely despise with my whole being.

First, let’s start with a fun ranking system. Below, you can see how I will rank each yarn, with “I’m Hooked” as my favorite and “Knot Impressed” as my least favorite.
Love at First Stitch: This yarn is top-tier and always finds its way onto my hook. It’s a go-to yarn when crocheting amigurumi.
Ami-zing: This yarn is great for amigurumi, and I enjoy crocheting with it. It may not be my favorite, but overall, I love this yarn.
Meh: For this yarn, we are somewhere in the middle. There may be a few things holding me back from using this yarn more. It’s usable, but I am not going to go out of my way to crochet with it.
Knot Impressed: This yarn is one and done for me. I am not impressed and will not be using it again.

I used to enjoy crocheting with this yarn more than I do now. It was one of the first yarns I tried when making amigurumi, but after experimenting with various other brands, I'm no longer as fond of it as I once was. While it's not completely unusable, I have found that this yarn tends to split often and doesn't look as nice on finished amigurumi pieces compared to some other brands. Acrylic yarns typically have more fuzzies, but this one has significantly more than other acrylics I've tried.

If you're a beginner at crocheting amigurumi, this yarn is a fantastic choice to start with.

If you're looking to crochet amigurumi using a super-bulky chenille-type yarn, Bernat Blanket yarn is an excellent choice! While this yarn weight isn’t my usual preference for amigurumi, I find it easy to work with and can create adorable, fun plushies. Another advantage of Bernat Blanket yarn is that it rarely sheds, unlike other chenille yarns. Also, 113 different color options! That’s almost unheard of! Although it can be quite expensive, you can often find good deals online.

In comparison, Bernat Blankets offers 113 different colors, making this selection seem rather inadequate.

Parfait Chunky may look similar to Sweet Snuggles Lite, but I consider it to be superior. While it does shed a bit more than Bernat Blanket yarn, the shedding is minimal. The yarn is incredibly soft and easy to work with, making me want to snuggle every plushie I crochet with it. With over 70 different color options available, you can create just about anything. Premier is also constantly adding new fun colors! This has definitely become one of my favorite chenille yarns for making amigurumi.

When JoAnn sadly exited the crafting world, I knew I had to find a new acrylic yarn to add to my list of trusted options. I decided to try Premier Basix Worsted and loved it almost immediately. With 93 different color options, I found a variety of shades for my designs and crochet projects that I may not have discovered elsewhere. Although Basix Worsted may not be as soft and shiny as Hobby Lobby I Love This Yarn, I find that it holds up well for amigurumi creations, helping them maintain their shape and creating an overall professional look. It has definitely become one of my go-to yarns when designing patterns.

The only positive aspect of this yarn is the impressive range of color options available, which could appeal to some crocheters looking for variety in their projects.
However, I was taken aback by the price, which is $5.99 per skein. I had initially thought this yarn would be more budget-friendly, especially in comparison to other acrylic yarns on the market. Unfortunately, that assumption was incorrect, making it even less appealing given its uncomfortable texture.

Scheepjes Catona comes in an impressive selection of 113 vibrant colors, allowing for endless creative possibilities in color combinations. However, finding reliable suppliers in the USA can be challenging and frustrating. Despite this, the quality and versatility of Scheepjes Catona make it worth the effort for any dedicated crocheter.

I know this might stir up some controversy, but I really don’t like Lily Sugar ‘n Cream yarn. While many people love it, my first experience with cotton yarn was with this brand, and it nearly turned me away from cotton altogether.
After trying several other cotton yarns, I find Lily Sugar ‘n Cream to be one of the stiffest and least pleasant to work with. It frequently splits and hurts my hands. There are many softer and more appealing options available. For me, it was a one-time experience, and I won’t be purchasing it again.
I’ve heard some crocheters enjoy using it for kitchen towels and washcloths, but when it comes to amigurumi, that’s a definite no for me.

This yarn is my top choice for various crochet projects, especially amigurumi, as it holds its shape well for making detailed characters.
While it’s a bit pricier than "I Love This Cotton," I can often find it on sale, making it a great investment. Overall, it’s a favorite in my crafting toolkit!
