Summer is almost here, which means a lot of us will be hitting the road or flying off on vacations. If you're anything like me, you always pack a bag with your crochet supplies, some yarn, and a project or two to keep your hands busy. But figuring out what to take can be a bit of a challenge.
Last year, I shared some of my best travel tips for crocheters in this blog post. It’s definitely worth checking out if you want some handy tips, like how to carry your crochet patterns, how to keep your supplies organized, tricks for avoiding motion sickness, and more! Today though, I'm focusing on project ideas that are perfect for taking on the go.

Guidelines for Projects Best for Travel
You can bring any crochet project you like when traveling, so don’t let these guidelines stop you from choosing what you want. However, following these simple tips can help you narrow down your options and select the best project for your journey.
- Choose small projects that require few yarn skeins, especially for air travel. If driving, you have more flexibility.
- Select crochet patterns with fewer color changes to minimize skeins.
- Avoid using chenille-type yarns that shed, especially when traveling by plane. If you don’t mind a little shedding in your car, feel free to bring a chenille yarn project! I personally would not want to deal with the mess while traveling, but that may just be me!
- Choose simple, memorable patterns to avoid constantly checking instructions.
- Select a project that can serve as a memento of the place you're visiting. For instance, during a trip to Scotland, I chose to crochet a Highland Cow while exploring the Highlands. It was fun to include him in my photos, and now I have the perfect souvenir from my journey!

I love taking granny square projects with me when I travel! Granny squares are compact and easy to pack, making them perfect for on-the-go crafting. They usually require only a few skeins of yarn and are relatively small in size. Plus, they are easy to remember since you're crocheting the same squares repeatedly! Some of the best granny square projects to travel with include:
- Book & Kindle Sleeves
